What to do if you need blepharoplasty (eyelid correction)?
Eyelid correction is the one of the most common procedures which patients request from a plastic/cosmetic surgeon. Loose eyelids leave the impression the person is sleepy and fatty pads around the eyes make face look unattractive.
What is meant by eyelid correction is most commonly blepharoplasty. Patients often seek out the correction of upper lid ptosis, defects and abnormalities, and deposits such as xanthelasma.
Eyelid correction – Indications and surgery preparation
Blepharoplasty, which is the medical term for eyelid correction procedure, involves lifting and tightening of eyelids. The procedure achieves better shape and appearance of the eye region. The perfect candidates for this kind of procedure are individuals who suffer from upper eyelid dropping which impairs vision. In this case, functionality appears as the most important factor for eyelid correction.
Patients who suffer from xanthelasma have cosmetic concerns that lay behind the motive to undergo blepharoplasty procedure. These unpleasant yellowish plaques are benign but aggravate eyelid appearance as well as that of the entire face.

Pads under eyes usually appear with age and as a result of chronic fatigue or collagen deficit in the epidermis. Since the skin is thinnest on the eyelids (0,1-0,2 mm) it easily gets relaxed with time.
Those who most often decide to undergo blepharoplasty are individuals who have noticeable bags under the eyes. They turn to facial aesthetic surgery to restore youthfulness and freshness of their face and hide evidence of fatigue. Blepharoplasty is also performed on patients in their mid-thirties who want to remove the first signs of aging.
Although it is a short procedure, laboratory analysis and general medical examination of the patient have to be conducted. Some of the contraindications to this procedure include chronic diseases, thyroid, and kidney diseases.
Alcohol and tobacco addiction can also be a barrier to carrying out eyelid correction procedure.

How is blepharoplasty performed?
After determining diagnosis, and consultation with the patient, a cosmetic surgeon will determine whether it is necessary to perform upper or lower eyelid correction. In some cases, the correction of both eyelids is required for achieving satisfactory results.
For the patient diagnosed with upper eyelid ptosis, blepharoplasty is not only performed due to cosmetic reasons. Eyelid ptosis may be unilateral (on a single lid), or bilateral (on both lids).
It is most often caused by trauma (nerve or muscle damage), but it may also be congenital. This defect has to be surgically treated, especially if it appears on both eyes, covers pupils, and interferes with vision.

Some patients turn to blepharoplasty because they want facial rejuvenation and tightening of the relaxed facial regions. In this case, the eyelid correction procedure is carried out in combination with face-lift and lip augmentation. Other procedures that contribute to the overall effect of the blepharoplasty include the forehead and eyebrow lift.
This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia or analgosedation. In the upper eyelid region, the incision is made in the shape of the ellipse to remove excessive skin. The procedure is being performed on the eyelid skin along the previously marked ellipse so the scar is left as indiscernible as possible. Next, the excessive skin and part of the muscle are being removed. Finally, the lid is being slightly lifted and fixed with nylon thread.
When it comes to the lower eyelid procedure, the incision is made directly below eyelashes, which also reduces the scar visibility. Removal of excessive fat and relaxed skin allows the strengthening of the supporting parts of the lid. This also reduces the size of unwanted fat pads.

Eyelid correction – Post-operational recovery
This procedure is not complicated and harmful and does not require longer stay in the clinic. For the hypersensitive patients, the doctor will prescribe analgetic therapy to make their home recovery more pleasant.
During the eyelid correction after-period, it is recommended to apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and redness. Alleviation usually comes by the end of the first week. However, it is not recommended to go to work until two weeks have passed from the procedure to prevent undesired effects.
In the first days immediately after the surgery, the patients are advised to have their heads elevated while sleeping and to keep from straining their eyes by reading or use of the computer.
In addition, to prevent hyperpigmentation of newly treated and sensitive eyelids, being on the sun should be avoided. After two weeks, eyelids should be protected by sunscreen or wide-brimmed hats. Sunglasses of good quality will protect you from sun rays and dust which can irritate your eyes.
Eyelid correction and facial aesthetic surgery effects
Individuals who want to preserve youthfulness are not the only people who turn to facial aesthetic surgery. This field is highly responsive to the needs of people who have a certain defect which lowers the quality of their life in many ways. Sometimes, what appears in the eye is hordeolum (sty) or cancer that has to be surgically removed.
Facial anomalies can be congenital but also acquired by trauma or injury. Those who are not satisfied with their facial appearance tend to take some steps to remove facial flaws. Many of them came to the Dental/Medical Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery Beograd–Centar and received help.
The team of surgeons led by Professor Zoran Stajčić has performed more than two thousand reconstruction and aesthetic surgeries. Professionalism, experience, and dedication to each patient allowed the clinic to gain a good reputation in Serbia, Europe, and the world.
