Cheek augmentation/reduction are requests frequently made to aesthetic surgeons. Surgical correction of the cheeks is the most effective method for modifying the zygomatic (cheek) bone for permanent augmentation or reduction.
HOW IMPORTANT ARE CHEEKS FOR A YOUTHFUL APPEARANCE?
The shape and volume of the cheek area are determined not only by the size of the zygomatic bone but also by the structure of the surrounding soft tissue. The loss of collagen and subcutaneous fat cells also leads to a decrease in the fibrous structure of the epidermis. This results in thinning and sagging of the skin over time, contributing to an aged facial appearance.
Advancements in aesthetic (plastic) facial surgery allow for the significant removal of signs of aging. The rejuvenation effect can be achieved, in part, by increasing the volume of the cheek area.
According to the patient’s wishes, it is possible to either expand or reduce the zygomatic bones for a better definition of the mid-facial mass.
PREOPERATIVE PREPARATION FOR CHEEK AUGMENTATION / REDUCTION
Preoperative preparation for this procedure includes the creation of a scan or X-ray of the zygomatic bone, as well as conducting certain tests.
SURGICAL CHEEK AUGMENTATION / REDUCTION AND POSTOPERATIVE RECOVERY
The operation is performed under general anesthesia with an incision made through the mouth. If augmentation of the zygomatic bone is necessary, it is cut and moved outward, and a bone graft is inserted into the empty space.
If reduction of the cheeks is performed, the zygomatic bone is moved inward after a portion of the bone is cut away. In this case, a shorter incision is also made on the skin in front of the ear.
Whether it is an augmentation or a reduction of the cheeks, the bone fragments are secured with titanium mini-plates and screws, which are biocompatible.
The plates can also be placed just beneath the cheeks in the area called the subzygomatic triangle. This effectively corrects sunken and dry cheeks, achieving a rejuvenating effect on the face.
During the two-week recovery period, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure and strenuous physical activities.
HOW TO ACHIEVE PERMANENT CHEEK AUGMENTATION / REDUCTION?
Since, unlike implants, this method carries minimal risk of complications (such as foreign body rejection and infections), the surgical approach is evidently the most effective for cheek augmentation/reduction.
The ultimate result of this intervention is a permanent aesthetic correction of the volume of the mid-facial mass.
